Notes and References

Produced by the American Society of Hematology (ASH®) in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Shared Decision Making National Resource Center.

The content of this conversation aid reflects the recommendations from ASH® guidelines about the care of patients with ITP. The full ASH® guidelines can be found at .

“Need for additional treatments within 6 months” was selected as a meaningful and accessible patient important outcome to center discussions of treatment efficacy in this conversation aid. It reflects best practice goals for no-more-than necessary corticosteroids or other additional treatments and the importance that many patients place on avoiding their side effects while recognizing the important role these interventions have in ITP management and living well with ITP.

Lacking direct reporting of need for additional treatments within 6 months in the evidence base, for the purposes of helping patients and clinicians discuss primary ITP management the developers of this conversation aid have provided estimates based on reported Sustained response off treatment (SROT) at 6 months outcomes for anti-CD20, TPO-RA, and their corticosteroid comparators, and the ASH® guideline panel's judgement of a small benefit for MMF over corticosteroids alone.
